![]() Information services is a huge field and is getting much larger and more complex; no one can cover it all. The day, on the other hand, seems to be shrinking; there are times when S&C has to turn away potential business. This page describes what we do (1) when we need expertise outside our fields, or (2) when we get more calls than we can handle. PartnersBroad-based Consulting Services. Scribble & Count has been allied with a mobile IT troubleshooting company for more than three years; we've performed standard technical writing and editing; we've organized and cataloged their extensive document collection; we critiqued and then revised their Website, and set up their FTP site. Bill has also traveled on assignment with them. If you are a mid-sized or larger company with a need to revise or merge IT processes and procedures, email Bill. If it looks like a fit, Bill will put you in touch with their management.Graphics. On most of its Website assignments, S&C uses Nimon Graphics (www.nimon.net). Sue hasn't done anything for Scribble & Count's Website (which, after all, should represent only our work), but she's helped on most of the other Websites we've done since mid-1999. She's creative, she's reliable, and she's client-oriented. As far as we know, she's never missed a deadline. (With all that going for her, it should be no surprise that she stays busy; when that happens, her network of other artists is invaluable.) Programming. When you can get him, Bill Trowbridge's Information Power Co. (www.infopower.com) is broad-based yet small and accessible. He does customized programming to specifications. Database programming is his particular interest -- and Website designers need that kind of expertise more than ever. WinHelp. Our long-time WinHelp colleague has gone on to other forms; but there's another good one in the mountains above Lyons, Colo. If he and we are both swamped, we know several good ones from our numerous professional organizations. Technical Communication. It's become a very broad field in the last 15 years. Depending on client needs, we would contact any of a hundred technical writers, configuration gurus, etc., that we know in one of the professional organizations. Mountain Technology AllianceThere are already a lot of talented techies in the central Rockies Front Range (above Ft. Collins, Loveland, Longmont, and Boulder; and along the I-70 and US 285 corridors). More, like us, are moving here all the time. Our intent is to feature mountain-oriented information professionals who provide quality information services:graphics artists; programmers/scripters; single-sourcing specialists; records managers; countless others. Eventually we hope to create a directory of these mountain folk with IT specializations. When that happens, we'll link to it from here. If you are an independent contractor, above Ft. Collins, Boulder, or C-470, email us, tell us what you do, and direct us to examples of your work. Help Authoring / Single Sourcing. Jim Ramsay, proprietor of Precisely: Documents by Design, knows as much about help authoring (WinHelp, HTML Help, JavaHelp, etc.) and single sourcing as anyone in the mountains - or in Denver, for that matter. Jim is already producing help requiring an XML-compatible viewer. Of the two best ways to create both platform-specific and cross-platform help, only FrameMaker plus WebWorks Publisher also single sources well. (It also avoids most of the problems associated with Netscape 4.x.) From this single source, Jim can produce help in any flavor and excellent print documentation as well; however, if you have legacy software that you prefer to retain, Jim can work with that as well. Jim can also "turn the key" over to your own staff: that is, design a help/single sourcing process and train your staff to create and maintain documentation with it. Scribble & Count has produced competent WinHelp since late 1994 - so we can judge quality. Jim wins awards for what he does. Write Your Own User Guide, his basic guide to the art and craft of technical writing, won an STC Achievement Award, and he has won other awards for quick-reference manuals and online documentation. Professional OrganizationsIt seems like every night's a meeting; the partial list below shows why. We learn a lot from the substantive agendae these groups always have, but just as important for you is that we also keep in touch with who in the area can do what.Society for Technical Communication. (www.stcrmc.org) The largest Technical Communication group in the world, and the largest TechComm group along the Colorado Front Range. Bill has addressed four STC regional conferences (Marci, two), and several local meetings. We recommend their resources all the time. Boulder Writers Alliance. (www.bwa.org) Boulder/North Denver-based and more diverse than just technical writing. BWA members have a team spirit that is unique and appreciated by clients. Bill was a panelist on a round table discussion devoted to telecommuting and mountain operations. Rocky Mountain Webmasters Guild. (www.rmwmg.org) (Denver-based) The more diverse of the two Colorado Web design organization, with content developers, generalist Webmasters, and online writers as well as graphics artists and scripters. We look here for counterparts. Web Designers & Developers. (www.webd2.org) (Boulder-based) Of the two Colorado Web design organizations, this one emphasizes programming and graphics -- and therefore a resource for content developers like ourselves. We look here when we need expertise we don't have. Rocky Mountain Internet Users Group (RMIUG). (www.rmiug.org) Eclectic group of inquiring minds and varied interests. A delightful group, which can also provided specialized expertise. |
