S&C Overview

Scribble & Count™ LLC was registered in 1993, but the experience of its owners (in writing, research, records management, and training) goes back much further. The name was chosen because (1) it wasn't "stodgy" and (2) it represented the two areas that the company originally emphasized: tech writing and business research.

S&C™ is an information services company (the current buzz-word is "knowledge management", but we don't use it often: anything so over-hyped rarely lasts). Its owners (Marci Bowman and Bill Sanders) bring in training and/or experience in almost every aspect of information processing:

tech writing/editing
records management research
training some graphics experience

The owners of Scribble & Count are not "newbies" online: S&C obtained its domain name in May 1994, when only 28,000 names had been chosen; 279 of every 280 "dot-coms" (including most of the high-tech household names you'd recognize) are newer than ours. Sanders was online even earlier than that: searching the world's largest publicly defined database in 1976, and training lawyers on Lexis and Westlaw with a 300-baud acoustic coupler in 1982. Bowman was using her Commodore 64 and CompuServe back in the mid-80s.

Services

Because of the broad experience of its owners, S&C has had diverse contracts such as the following:

	Hypertext: both Websites (HTML) and software help (WinHelp/HTML Help).
	Traditional tech writing: software documentation, release notes, engineering reports, procedure manuals, proposals, etc.
	Specialized research: articles and research on hardy grasses for golf courses; searches of directories published in both France and Norway, e.g.
	Training: use and maintenance of templates; using Windows Help; turnover instruction.
	Records management: design of a classification schema for corporate documentation and cataloging of all items within it; organizing the documents on an FTP site.
	Consultation: when and how to move from print to online, or from WinHelp to HTML; recommendations concerning authoring tool selection.

The research, training, and records management expertise has primarily been used to support technical writing: the owners are better writers because they have been teachers, because they have used reference books, and because they are such good researchers.

In order to integrate these complementary areas of expertise, and because it will soon move its office to Clear Creek County, S&C has revised the services it offers; see the Services pages for details.

Facilities

Scribble & Count has everything required for reliable performance at client site, in its office, or in the field:

	Four computers, variously configured for production, communications, backup, legacy software, and field use;
	Three printers, for high speed, color, and backup use;
	Scanner;
	Tape backup;
	Digital camera

In its current quarters all that equipment is cramped, alongside three file cabinets and rows of reference materials. The relocation to the mountains, will double S&C's office space, and triple its storage and filing capacity. (For example, the "legacy" computer (equipped with a 13" monitor and running outdated browsers, Word 6, and other old software) will be on the same floor as the production machines. This will make Website testing much more efficient. The scanner, the fax, and one of the three printers will not have to be "towered". The list of improvements is long.)

Publications & Presentations

S&C has written extensively and presented materials at national and regional conferences. The Bibliography page lists most of these (along with selected client documents), and contains links to those that are available in the S&C Archive.

Mountain Relocation

Bill and Marci are moving to the mountains above Idaho Springs (9300 feet, 10 min. to I-70, 50 minutes to downtown Denver) in mid-2001. This relocation provides an opportunity to redefine S&C's services, which have become more mobile and integrate better the broad information services backgrounds of the owners.
