Part I: Origins of the Conflict

[Until recently, flamingos roamed the grounds around Mule Deer Towers. They puzzled clients; locals and construction crews used them when giving directions; signs concerning the birds were erected (and ordered removed by the county). This is the story of the Clear Creek County Flamingo Wars.]
Origins. Most folks agree that the mountains came first, then Dangerous Dan. Even Dan says only that "I've been in these mountains since they were little hills". In any event, Dan presided over Mule Deer Country. He owned a mining claim that straddled the ridge and, absent neighbors, considered the entire area something of a fief.

Slowly, settlers moved in. A gambler operating out of Central City settled below Dan. Then, two semi-techies named Bowman and Sanders bought some land above him. Although the recent arrivals were quiet and out of visual range, Dan felt constricted. There may have been some disagreement with Sanders over the possibility of placing a fast-food outlet where Mule Deer Trail descended to join a broader wagon track called Red Tail Ridge. Next » |
