Browser-Safe Colors
For nearly two years, Scribble & Count has used Lynda Weinman's "browser-safe" palette: the 256 colors represented in one byte (28 = 256), minus the 40 that Microsoft and Netscape may have just stopped fighting over: for various reasons, too many users refuse to exceed that limit, and we've found that the discipline was consistent with our anti-glitz approach.| Note: | Dithering of JPEGs is normally not noticeable, so we're making no attempt to restrict the colors of the mountain photographs we post. |
Although we have not begun designing for WebTV or hand-held PDAs (which have an even more reduced video capacity), we are considering conforming to the following 140-color palette. (We decided to call the restricted set "Cautious Colors", primarily so that the name would fit on the left navigation bar.)
