Because fonts add a lot to the "look and feel" of a page (and often to the retrievability of data), authors have tried hard to gain control over this aspect.
The table below lists the roughly equivalent fonts for Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and a vanilla standby which virtually any browser will recognize and fill.
| Note: | The fonts listed below are shipped with all Windows, Mac System7 and 8, and most Unix flavors. Users, however, can (and do) install and remove at will. |

The <font> tag has been deprecated in HTML 4.0, and will be removed, possibly as soon as XHTML 2. CSS1, IE4, Netscape 4, and Opera 3.5 all support the font selector, and family, size, weight, style, and other properties.
