![]() But we are now revising our service offerings. In this Front Door, we explain why we've changed, describe what we're offering, and provide links to details. Reasons for the RevisionHypertext Emphasis. S&C began writing WinHelp and designing Websites in 1994. Now both partners (Bill Sanders and Marci Bowman) speak nationally, and are well known locally, for hypertext (list of available conference handouts). Our new service offerings emphasize HTML (and, to a lesser extent, WinHelp). Integrating Diverse Qualifications. The resumes of both Marci and Bill show a good deal more than traditional tech writing: hypertext, records management, research, instruction. Bill was recently named Director of Information Management for a mobile IT troubleshooting company. He was charged with redesigning the company's Website, setting up an Ftp site, and developing all information-based services. Our new service offerings better utilize our expertise in information architecture, research and reference, and training. Upcoming Move to the Mountains. The future office site (see Mountain Relocation pages) is only an hour from Denver (35 min. from Denver West) -- but who wants to negotiate I-70 twice/day? The new services are designed to be more project- (vice process-) oriented, and therefore less dependent on a rigid commute. Experience with Mobile Troubleshooting Team. For the past 2½ years, Bill has been a member of a small, mobile IT team; in 1998, he made several trips with the team to NYC. In 1999-2000, he spent a year setting up documentation south of Colorado Springs, a project that was more efficiently accomplished by living onsite three or four days during mid-week. The new service offerings exploit this mobility, which most other information service companies lack. Menu of New ServicesThe services are summarized below; follow the links for details.Create, Revise, or Manage Documentation Processes. (Provided by: Sanders) Startup companies often lack documentation; established companies may need to add new media or simply make their production more efficient. Sanders is well suited for this generalist task, which includes policies and procedures, styles and templates, records management, staffing and training, and budgetary responsibility. His last two major assignments have been to create documentation departments, and he ran public, academic, law, and technical libraries in the 1970s and '80s. Web Content/Design. (Provided by: Bowman and/or Sanders) Websites vary greatly in purpose and audience; S&C specializes in providing content for information sites, and in arranging that content for maximum comprehension and retrieval. To do this effectively requires both extensive online experience and broad understanding of information services: Sanders went online in the mid-70s Bowman in the 80s; both have broad experience creating and disseminating all kinds of information. Software Documentation. (Provided by: Bowman and/or Sanders) We've done this for too long and are too good at it not to offer it again, but we are now stressing usability and single-sourcing (see next paragraph). Since we can read specifications or code and can work with buggy alpha releases, we can document during early development; we often write as many bug reports as a developer. Details. Corporate Styles, Document Conversion, & Single Sourcing. (Provided by: Sanders) Styles are important for efficient document production, improved usability, and consistent appearance; but they're vital for single-sourcing or conversion from one medium to the next. And they are required for everything posted on the Web using features developed after 18-Dec-97. (You may have posted your first Website last month, but if it doesn't contain style sheets, can't be using any feature developed after Dec. 97. Styles are at the heart of all these issues: efficient production, improved usability, consistent appearance, document conversion, future Web compatibility. Details. |
